Exploring the Journey Toward ‘Magical Tidiness’

Today, Helen Ellis lives the much-vaunted tidy life: “My tights are rolled like sushi, my tabletops are bare and my kitchen is so clean I could perform surgery in it.”

However, as Ellis notes in her New York Times Modern Love essay, she wasn’t always this way. In fact, at the age of 23, her Manhattan apartment was so cluttered that she left with a nasty surprise stuck to her back. (You’ll have to read the essay itself for the dirty details.)

When Ellis met the man she was to marry, he walked into her apartment and was stunned at what he found there: Pop-Tart crusts on the couch. What was more, she didn’t seem to notice them.

Let me pause here and say that this is not the end of the world. If this is you, change is possible.

So how did Helen Ellis get from food-littered furniture (and far, far worse) to a pin-tidy home? Check out her story for yourself, then give your own home a look. What can you do to make your place a more inviting spot?
